Animals have been my whole world for as long as I can remember. Not a side interest… more like the center of gravity.

I grew up on a farm in Ireland, surrounded by a rotating cast of chaos and charm…border collies with more personality than most people, a lamb named Snowball who genuinely believed he was a dog, a semi-feral rabbit who very much did not return my love, bottle-fed calves that followed me around like puppies, and Maverick, my Connemara pony, who’s still with us at the grand old age of 32.

They weren’t just part of my life… they shaped it.

I’ve rescued pheasants from roadside ditches, released foxes back into the wild, and chased stray dogs through schoolyards hoping I’d be allowed to keep them. If an animal was in trouble, I was there. Always.

…and then came Blue

Eleven years ago, Blue bounded into my life ….my beautiful, energetic, one-in-a-million boy. Like any good dog mum, I just wanted to give him the best life possible.
So I did what I thought was “right.”

Fed the food my vet recommended. Kept all his vaccines up to date. Signed up for pet insurance. Trusted the system.

But over the years, as I kept learning, listening, and asking questions… I started to see a different picture. Not just in my own experience, but in the stories I was hearing from other dog owners, vets, and researchers.

The uncomfortable truth about modern pet care...

Cancer rates in dogs are climbing.

Approximately 1 in 4 dogs will develop cancer at some point during their life, and this risk increases to 1 in 2 for dogs 10 years or older.

50% of dogs over 10 will get cancer…..Thats pretty scary statistic. Diabetes is on the rise too… faster in pets than in humans with over half a million cases diagnosed each year.

Meanwhile, corporations are quietly taking over nearly every corner of pet care… from the trusted food brands we once relied on, like Orijen, Acana, and Nom Nom… to the very vet clinics we count on for help. Independent practices are being pushed out, prices are climbing, and a small handful of companies are tightening their grip.

Mars - yes, the candy giant behind M&M’s and Skittles, now owns over 2,500 vet clinics, making it the largest provider of veterinary care in the world.

Because make no mistake… pet care is big business.

Behind the feel good ads, friendly packaging and wellness buzzwords are some of the biggest corporations in the world…Mars, Nestlé, Colgate-Palmolive, J.M. Smucker. They don’t just make the food. They own the clinics. The prescription diets. Even the “trusted” brands lining the shelves.

When a handful of companies control the diet, the diagnosis, and the bill… you have to wonder… is this what’s best for your pet, or what’s best for their bottom line?

Once I saw it, I couldn’t unsee it.
And I can’t pretend it doesn’t matter.
